Map, ca. 1863, of northern Ga. and eastern Tenn. Drawn by Capt. J.S. Tyner, it depicts the terrain of an area extending from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Dalton, Ga. Stating a scale of 1" = 2 miles, the map shows first and second class roads, bridges, fords, ferries, railroads in operation, unfinished railroad lines, mills, and some residences. It also shows topographic landmarks such as Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Walden's Ridge, White Oak Mountains, and Taylor's Ridge. Communities shown on the map include LaFayette (Tenn.), Cleveland (Tenn.), Georgetown (Tenn.), Charleston (Tenn.), Calhoun (Tenn.), and Harrison (Tenn.).

J.S. Tyner was a map draftsman with the 1st Confederate Cavalry Regiment in the first part of the Civil War. In 1863 Sept. he was assigned to serve with General Joseph Wheeler. The 1st Confederate Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from Ala., Ky., and Tenn. The unit fought at Murfreesboro, Thompson's Station, Chickamauga, and Blue Springs, and was also involved in the Atlanta campaign.
